The Bum Fund

Now I know this topic isn't directly on DOA but the trend is spreading in the FGC like wildfire. I'm not sure who came up with the idea of starting their own Donation Drive; but whoever you are, I completely disagree with this.

Before I get chewed out about this, let me explain. I do think that helping people out to go to tournaments is a generous thing to do. There's nothing wrong with lending a helping hand. Starting your own donation campaign is on a totally different level. You are not homeless or a cancer patient. If you are able to work and flat out do not have a job, going to a tournament should not even be in the top 5 of your priority list. If you do have a job and still aren't able to afford to attend a tournament, that means you obviously have some responsibilities you need to take care of in your personal life.
I'm all for showing up to events to support the offline community but if I can't make it to an event because of financial issues, I simply bite the bullet. Now if I tell people that I'm not able to afford the trip and they offer to help, I might take them up on the offer. I think it's kinda obnoxious to just ask everyone to donate money to you so you can have a good time. You can justify it by saying you really want to compete but who doesn't party it up at these events?
I remember it being brought to my attention the situation about SweetRevenge going to France. That situation is a little different in my opinion. I actually think that idea is cool. Traveling outside the country is pretty expensive but the whole concept - to me - isn't all about the money. I think it's a great opportunity to get to compete with other players outside of our country. Everyone agrees that different countries have different styles of technique. It's also awesome to get to connect with people from abroad who have the same love we do. So I agree with helping out players who want to go international. You don't really know anyone in a different country so how could they help you with plane tickets, food, or finding a place to stay?

I'll repeat myself: I think helping out is great. But if your bank account is looking like you can't even download the costume packs in whatever game you play and can't feed yourself for the week, stay home. There's always the next event or next year. Stay home.
